Heather Lockhart has always had great pride in pulling on a Scotland Women's jersey, but when she hangs up her boots in the future there is no doubt that she will look back on the 87th cap as a very special one.

That 87th outing came at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld on Friday night as Shade Munro’s side created history by winning in the Six Nations for the first time since 2010.

The Scots defeated Wales 15-14 with Sarah Law holding her nerve to kick the winning penalty with three minutes to go.

Earlier in the evening Lisa Thomson and Rhona Lloyd had scored tries and Law had kicked a conversion.

The players were delighted at the end and no wonder given the long wait for a victory.

Indeed, 22 members of the 23 player squad listed had never tasted triumph in the showpiece tournament before.

Prop Lockhart, 44, is the exception to the rule having been part of the squad that beat France 10-8 at Hawthornden in Lasswade seven years ago.

“It seems a long time ago and everyone has been reminding us that it was that long since we had won in the Six Nations, so to get a victory against Wales on Friday night was such a good feeling,” Hillhead/Jordanhill’s Lockhart said.

“I have been around the Scotland set-up for many years, but there was something about the buzz that we had in camp last week that made me think we could finally get the win.

“We trained really well and we had some really good ‘down time’ as a group doing various activities and on the match day everyone seemed very calm.

“I was on the bench during the first half and even when we went 14-0 down the girls did not start to panic and the try that Lisa Thomson scored before half-time was superb and got us back into things and onto the front foot.

“The second half performance was one of the best I have been part of with Scotland and I was just delighted to come off the bench for the last 13 minutes or so to help close things out.

“That night and over the weekend my phone was going crazy with texts and phone calls and it was great to hear from so many of my ex-team mates who were so proud to see what we had achieved.

“When I head out for the national anthems before matches nowadays it still gives me the same buzz as it did a few years back and I am very proud to represent my country and give it my all.”

And rather than bask in the glory of the momentous win, Lockhart believes this group can now build from here because the young players involved bring such energy to the party.

“There is a lot of talent in the current squad and the young players coming through put so much into being the best they can be,” she stated.

“A lot of them are in the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy and this helps them work on their skills a lot more and get time in the gym while the rest of us also meet up more regularly now to do work together and we all have our own strength & conditioning programme to follow and such like.

“Another thing that has moved on a lot in the last couple of years has been the amount of time we get to spend together as a squad.

“We have England next up on March 11 and we know they are a very good side, but we are feeling good right now.”
