Jamie Langfield is set to virtually hang up his gloves after penning a new one-year deal with St Mirren.

The 37-year-old will still be registered as a player for next season but, with manager Jack Ross seeking two new keepers, will be expected to concentrate on coaching.

The former Dundee and Aberdeen number one joined his hometown team in 2015 and has made 52 appearances for his boyhood heroes.

But, after playing just 13 times this season, the Paisley-born shot-stopper is relishing the chance to kick-start the next stage of his career.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted to get the chance to continue with a club so close to my heart, and help get it back where it belongs.

“I would like to thank the gaffer, James Fowler and Allan McManus for the faith they have shown in my coaching ability.”

Ross brought in Manchester City youngster Billy O’Brien on loan for the second half of the campaign and has revealed Langfield’s work with the Wales under-21 cap helped earn him a new contract.

He said: “We were impressed with Jamie's coaching in the last part of the season.

“We felt that he really improved as a coach and were impressed with the job he did improving Billy O'Brien and the other young goalkeepers.

“While he will be registered as a player, we are very much looking to bring in some goalkeepers and Jamie's main focus next season will be on the coaching side of things.”
