Celtic made history in Lisbon today by winning the European Cup – we rate the heroes of the hour.
RONNIE SIMPSON
His back-heel ten miles out of his own goal will go down in history. Had no chance with the penalty and after that never looked like being beaten. Oh, and he got his false teeth back at the end. 10
JIM CRAIG
Was disgracefully robbed at the penalty; however he then went on to have a quite brilliant match. He ignored his manager’s instructions to get up field and link-up with big Tam for the equaliser. 10
TOMMY GEMMELL
For an outside right he is some left-back. What a shot, what a goal and what a performance. He was even involved in the winner as he bamboozled the Italian defence with his skills. 10
BOBBY MURDOCH
A genius. It’s as simple as that. Never gave away the ball, sprayed passes all over the pitch and only a superb goalkeeping performance denied him a goal. Imagine how good he would have been if fully fit. 10
BILLY MCNEILL
What a leader, legend and now a Lion. McNeill kept his team-mates calm after the early setback and the Italian clearly didn’t fancy taking on another Cesar. 10
JOHN CLARK
The sweeper absolutely cruised this. Read everything perfectly, never missed a tackle and was the perfect foil for his captain. No fuss, no drama, no problem. 10
JIMMY JOHNSTONE
You had to pity the poor Inter players who tried to get close to this little magician. Was so unlucky to score on the day but his overall contribution was nothing short of perfection. 10
WILLIE WALLACE
What a signing this player has been. He might not have got his usual goal but Whispy stretched Inter until they had nothing left. Some sublime moments and another who was unfortunate not to get a goal. 10
STEVIE CHALMERS
Something tells me his winning goal will be remembered for a few years. This was the actions of a world class striker as he read the direction of the ball to pass it past Sarti with six minute to go. 10
BERTIE AULD
From his singing the Celtic song in the tunnel, to bossing the midfield against a two-time European Cup winning team, this was some overall performance from the gallus Glaswegian. 10
BOBBY LENNOX
On another day he could have score a hat-trick. Never stopped running – and really quickly of course – and those wearing blue and black couldn’t get near to him. 10
MANAGER
JOCK STEIN
The mastermind behind Celtic’s greatest hour. He got everything 100 per cent right, from the pre-match training session to the team-talk to how the team was set out. Stein won the European Cup by playing beautiful and inventive football. What a man. 11
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
