Jim Duffy and Hibs counterpart Neil Lennon have had their differences this season, but the Morton manager has clearly put their spat behind him. So much so, in fact, that Duffy believes Lennon should have collected the manager of the year award, and not him.

The 58-year-old was presented with the Ladbrokes Championship manager of the season award yesterday at a sun-drenched Cappielow - just reward after a remarkable season for his side.

But with typical modesty, Duffy said it should have been the man with whom he had an infamous bust-up with at Easter Road back in March that should have been collecting the gold trophy.

“It’s humbling and slightly embarrassing I suppose,” Duffy said. “Generally speaking, the awards go to the winners, and probably rightfully so.

“If it was up to me I’d have given it to Neil Lennon for winning the league and getting to the semi-final of a cup. What a job he’s done.

“People can talk about resources, quality and being able to bring in certain people. That doesn’t matter. Hibs have had those resources for three years and didn’t manage to get out of the division.

“They did it with points to spare, in a very competitive division, so that was outstanding. His players will tell you he’s demanding.

“We’ve no problem whatsoever. It was something I might look back on and laugh about in a few years. They’ll be a real asset and a force in the Premiership next year.

“Nevertheless, it’s a prestigious award that I’m thrilled to receive. Football management’s a precarious business so when it’s going okay you have to enjoy it. This season’s been a good one for Morton.”

Duffy’s perfect day was topped off with the news that midfielder Andy Murdoch has become the latest member of the squad to commit for next season, signing a one-year deal.

He said: “We’re delighted that Andy is going to sign on again, and we’re still waiting on Rickie Lamie, Michael Tidser, Mark Russell and Michael Doyle, and hopefully we’ll get word back from them this week.

“Then I will have a clear indication of what I need to bring in. The nucleus of the side still have a year of their contracts to go, so they are going to be there and it’s not quite as big a rebuilding job as the last couple of years.

“So, we’re in a positive position just now. Everyone can enjoy the summer and everyone can be optimistic towards the start of the new season.”
