BLACKBURN ROVERS have terminated the contract of former Celtic striker Anthony Stokes, who could be set for a return to Hibernian.

The Republic of Ireland international left the Hoops on a free transfer last summer following a loan spell at Easter Road, but struggled for game time with the English Championship side.

Stokes scored three goals in 12 appearances across during 2016/17 and Rovers confirmed on Friday that a mutual agreement had been reached with the player to tear up his deal.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move back to Hibs and attended Lewis Stevenson's testimonial match in Edinburgh earlier this month.

Hibees boss Neil Lennon signed the forward for Celtic in August 2010 and he spent the 2015/16 season on loan in the capital, scoring 10 goals in 27 games and helping them to Scottish Cup glory by scoring twice against Rangers in the final.
