Beth Potter all but sealed her shot at taking on the triathlon at the Commonwealth Games by rounding off her debut season in the sport with victory at the European Sprint Cup in Funchal.
The 25-year-old has been battling Achilles problems since coming 21st in the 10,000 metres at the World Athletics Championships in London last month.
But the Glaswegian dominated the run – going over 90 seconds faster than anyone else on the final 5km leg – to finish over half a minute clear of Austria’s Therese Feuersinger in a time of 1:01:36 to clinch the biggest win of her second career.
“I’ve been having a hard time with the foot injury but my swimming and biking are on the up,” she said. “I’m hoping that’s my Gold Coast spot sorted. I had to be in the top three and I’ve done that.”
Stirling-based Fergus Roberts was 26th in the men’s event, won by Italy’s Delian Stateff.
