Hibs youngster Oli Shaw announced his arrival on the big stage in style at the weekend, scoring with just his second touch at Hampden after coming on against Celtic to breathe new life into the Betfred Cup semi-final.

Although his side ultimately fell short in the 4-2 defeat, the goal was still a great moment for the 19-year-old, who has some very big boots to fill from within his own family.

“My grandpa is my biggest fan, so it was great to have him there watching,” said Shaw afterwards. “He and my dad have both been big influences on me. They both used to play and they come to watch every game.

“They’re up in Aberdeen; they’re everywhere. They always give me advice and tell me to go and enjoy the experience if I get on. My dad is Greg Shaw. He played for Ayr, Falkirk and Dunfermline. He was a striker too. Was he as good as me? I honestly don’t know. I didn’t see him play. I was too young.

“I obviously didn’t see my grandad play either, but from what I hear he was a good player. I’ve heard the stories. He was a striker as well. We’re a big football family. It was football for me pretty much from the day I was born.”

It wasn’t the first time that Shaw has found the net at the national stadium, although the circumstances could hardly have been more different the last time he scored against Queen’s Park.

“I’ve done it before but not quite in the same way,” he said. “This time it was in front of 40,000 fans.

“I scored two for Stenhousemuir here, obviously it wasn’t quite the same.”
