NEIL McCann, the Dundee manager, last night played down his touchline altercation with Tony Docherty, the Aberdeen assistant, following his side’s narrow 1-0 defeat at Dens Park last night.

McCann, who had to be separated from Docherty at the end of a Labdbrokes Premiership game which his side had been unfortunate to lose, confessed he had perhaps gone over the top.

"I was maybe a wee bit aggressive in my congratulations for winning three points," he said. "I didn’t even see him celebrate. I think he’s entitled to celebrate a goal. I’ve no problem with that.

"The performance was there, although we didn’t get anything from the game. They’ve shown a lot of character to stay in the match. It shows respect that Aberdeen decided to camp in and hit on the counter.

"I am disappointed because the boys put in a lot of effort tonight. Coming up against a team who have been the second best in the country for the past few years, the boys can be pleased. You have to commend their goalkeeper.

"I disagree with Derek (Aberdeen manager McInnes). We deserved to take something from the game. Joe Lewis has made two very good saves. There was also a shout for a penalty.

"It has gone against us a lot this season. The boys deserved something for their application and the chances we created."

McCann also felt that Aberdeen right back Shay Logan could have got sent off after being booked by match official Nick Walsh.

"Nick has warned Shay," he said. "Often you get a yellow card for a foul. But he’d had a couple before his yellow, then he gets a warning.

"We haven't had that luxury this season. I find that quite annoying. I’m not one to cry out for a red. But it would have been justified."
