Stuart Hogg: Did all the basics and played percentages but was never going to be man of the match given displays of others around him 7
Tommy Seymour: Made a couple of half-breaks during the first half as the Scots threw the ball around. Lasted an hour before being injured 7
Huw Jones: World-class? Certainly looked the past in the first half with an opportunistic piece of finishing and a wonderful break that led to Scotland’s second score 9
Pete Horne: Tackled well and an excellent foil to allow Finn Russell and Jones to play their game either side7
Sean Maitland: Like his team-mates, held firm as England turned up the heat. Showed his fantastic finishing with the second Scottish try. Right place, right time 8
Finn Russell: The Warriors stand-off brought his “A” game to Murrayfield and teased England with ball in hand or when kicking, as he did for the Jones try 9
Greig Laidlaw: Having had a great kicking game against the French, the former skipper showed the rest of his attributes in this one. Tremendous showing 8
Gordon Reid: Held up his corner of the scrum consistently as the English forward machine put the squeeze on 7
Stuart McInally: Amazing to see the Edinburgh hooker twice making decent ground almost as a second winger out wide. More importantly, got the line-out throws spot-on 8
Simon Berghan: Handled the bulk of Mako Vunipola in the set-piece reasonably comfortably and put in a proper shift when it came to repelling the second-half white waves 8
Grant Gilchrist: Played his part, but gave away early penalties for blocking and dragging down a maul. Still worked enough to get plus marks 7
Jonny Gray: Did so much of the hard, unseen graft. Supremely effective as a front-line tackler, but his work as Scotland employed their counter-rucking tactics was excellent 7
John Barclay: What a game – again – from the Scotland captain. Always leads by example, never better than yesterday. And picked up a cup! 8
Hamish Watson: Seen at his “jackler” best a couple of times but was watched closely by referee Nigel Owens and penalised to give England their first points 8
Ryan Wilson: Used several times as the principle jumper but was huge in the tackle. Abrasive as an angle grinder – without the safety guard 9
Replacements
Jamie Bhatti: On the pace immediately. Willem Nel: Got involved as sub for Berghan. Tim Swinson: Gave Gilchrist a breather late on. David Denton: Swapped for the impressive Wilson. Ali Price: Got last 20 minutes. Nick Grigg: Late run out for Horne. Blair Kinghorn: Got to make debut replacing Seymour.
England
Mike Brown: Great try-saving tackle on Sean Maitland saved England from going further behind, but sacrificed as Eddie Jones introduced the quick boys and England went for broke 5
Anthony Watson: Never really saw the ball in open field and when he did, was suffocated by the Scots’ rush defence. Eventually switched to full-back 5
Jonathan Joseph: He was selected at outside centre. That means he was the one up against Huw Jones. That says everything about his day in Edinburgh 5
Owen Farrell: Kicked well but appeared to get caught up too easily in personal battles, especially with Finn Russell. Great score to spark England’s very brief revival 6
Jonny May: Showed his pace a few times where from nowhere he made serious yardage. But well shackled by Seymour & Co 5
George Ford: In a straight head-to-head fight against Russell, referee Nigel Owens would have stopped this contest to prevent further punishment 4
Danny Care: Was well on his way to celebrating a try under the posts – only for Owens to bring him back for Joe Launchbury’s indiscretion on the floor 4
Mako Vunipola: Big ball carrier for England although he perambulated more than ran at the Scottish defensive line. Never got better of Berghan in the scrum 4
Dylan Hartley: The skipper became England’s second-most capped player when leading his side, but could do nothing to lift them after first 40 minutes 5
Dan Cole: Another who was expected to put pressure on the Scottish scrum but the Leicester tight-head found himself under real scrutiny from Gordon Reid 4
Joe Launchbury: One of the principle runners for England and wasn’t shy or lacking in that capacity. However, like others, found the blue wall impenetrable 5
Maro Itoje: Was going to be one of England’s big-time players at Murrayfield but was only seen on the fringes of the action. Not like him 4
Courtney Lawes: Unlucky to be adjudged for knock-on by eagle-eyes Owens. Said he was going to target Russell. When does that begin Courtney? 4
Chris Robshaw: Worked well on the deck under pressure from the Scots and did his job of slowing the ball down for the rampant hosts 5
Nathan Hughes: Brought in to make hard yards and did the job well without making the key line breaks. Crucially he missed his tackle on Jones 4
Replacements
Jamie George: Got to replace Hartley. Joe Marler: Comeback after suspension. Harry Williams: Replaced Cole. George Kruis: Deputised for the exhausted Launchbury. Sam Underhill: Yellow carded for no-arms tackle. Richard Wigglesworth: Got on for 10 minutes for Care. Ben Te’o: Replacement for the underwhelming Ford. Jack Nowell: Brought on for his pace.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
