GRAEME Murty, the Rangers manager, last night admitted he could look to keep Sean Goss, the Queens Park Rangers player who has moved to Ibrox on loan, beyond the end of the season.
Goss, the former Manchester United youth player, has been excellent for the Glasgow club since arriving last month and has established himself as a first-choice central midfielder.
The 22-year-old is set to return to his English Championship club at the end of the 2017/18 campaign, but Murty, who has been delighted with how he has fared, may try to keep him.
“He kind of goes under the radar a bit because at the moment the people that are getting the headlines are Jamie Murphy, Alfredo Morelos, Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias at times,” he said.
“They are the guys who are the flashier players, but Sean brings stability to the side. He has got a lovely range of passing, he is always willing to take the ball. I think he has added a control to our play and pattern that we have needed.
“I am really pleased with his contribution so far although, and he will tell you because we had a conversation about it, I still think there is more to come from him.”
Asked if he hoped to extend Goss’s stay in Glasgow beyond this season, Murty said: “Possibly. He is one of a number of players that we are looking at. As we have always said, the evolution of the squad never stops and we are always assessing people as to where they would fit in to what we do.
“What I will say, is that he has made a really good start and he has shown that he understands how we want to play and the pre-requisites of playing for Rangers at Ibrox. He looks quite comfortable doing that.
“QPR have said ‘you are not having him, keep your hands off’. Seriously, though, football situations like that tend to be quite fluid, I find.”
Murty, whose side take on St Johnstone in a Ladbrokes Premiership match at McDiarmid Park in Perth this evening, believes Goss, who has been involved in seven games for Rangers, is relishing being at Ibrox.
He said: “Look at the people we brought in: Sean, Russell [Martin], Jamie [Murphy] and Jason [Cummings], who is a bit frustrated at the moment.
“They haven’t had a lot of game time. They are enjoying being on the pitch and we have offered them that platform. It is up to the players to go and take that opportunity and run with it as much as they can.
“I think all of the players I have mentioned have tried to maximise their game time and enjoy it and I am reaping the benefits of these guys becoming fitter, fitting into our method of doing things and they have really enhanced what we are trying to do.”
Rangers could close the gap on Celtic at the top to six points for 24 hours with a win. The champions are not due to play until tomorrow.
