GRAEME Murty may be convinced that Greg Docherty is capable of representing Scotland in the future, but the Rangers midfielder himself harbours less lofty ambitions.

Remaining in the Ibrox first team, developing his blossoming partnership with Sean Goss, adding goals to his game and possibly, at a push, getting into the under-21 side are his objectives.

Those who have watched the 21-year-old since he clinched his £675,000 transfer from Hamilton Academical to his childhood heroes in the January transfer window would suggest he could and should aim higher.

He was once again impressive in a 4-1 triumph over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Tuesday evening that extended his side’s winning run to five games and moved them to within six points of Ladbrokes Premiership leaders Celtic.

However, Docherty, who grew up cheering on his hero Barry Ferguson from the Ibrox stands as a boy, is, probably quite wisely, refusing to get too far ahead of himself.

“It is a bit strange and still weird for me to be honest with you,” he said. “But I am loving it and relishing it every day. I am going into work every day and it is a new challenge.

“I am going to treat every day like it is my last and treat every day like it is a cup final. That is what I am doing and I want to do my best for this club. Consistency is massive for me and I am looking to get that.

“I am loving it at the minute and loving playing football. The gaffer has been excellent with me and all the boys and staff have been brilliant and helped me settle in right away. Hopefully now I can repay them with performances and consistency and that is what I am looking for.

“The gaffer’s advice to me has just been to be more disciplined. At Hamilton there was an extra midfielder so I had a more free role. At Rangers, you need to be a bit more disciplined and I am enjoying it. I have two assists in two games and that is what I like to do, make assists and get in the box and hit shots.

“I am still getting up there and that is where I want to be, at that end of the pitch. I am enjoying my football at the moment and long may that continue.

“I hope I can stay in the side, but I will take each game as it comes. You see the bench is so strong and the squad is so strong, there are guys not even on the bench that are experienced players. I am learning from these guys every single day and it is brilliant for me, it is priceless.”

Murty predicted that Docherty could replace Scott Brown, who announced his retirement from international football on Monday, in the national team in the future.

But the player himself said: “I am not thinking about that at the moment to be honest. If it comes it comes. My aim is to get in the under-21 team. I didn’t play the last couple of games there so I would like to be involved more.

“It has always been a dream to get to the A squad, but I am taking each game as it comes with Rangers. I want consistency playing for Rangers first and then I will look further on.”

If Docherty continues to dovetail so well with Goss, the former Manchester United youth player who has joined Rangers on loan from Queens Park Rangers until the end of the season, he may well find himself getting called up by Scotland for the friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary next month or the games against Peru and Mexico in the summer.

Asked how he is enjoying playing with his fellow new boy, he said: “I am loving it. Sean is a naturally great footballer and very technically gifted. I am learning from him as well and I think we work off each other.

“I will maybe do a bit more of the work and then give him the ball. You see some of his passes, like the one for the penalty, are sensational. He cut St Johnstone right open.

“I am loving playing with him and he is a great guy as well. He is a similar age to me so we are enjoying it at the moment and just want to keep on winning.

“We clicked straight away on a personal level and off the park he is one of the guys I am closest to in the dressing room. I am tight with everyone in the dressing room and it has been very welcoming for me. I am happy and I just want to keep on playing.

“He has asked me where to go to eat and things like that. He has got a few friends up here with the Man Utd boys on loan so he has settled in well. The dressing room is very close knit and he is a great guy so I am loving playing with him.”

Goss netted the third goal in Perth on Tuesday night – a stunning free-kick that he curled over the defensive wall and beyond St Johnstone keeper Alan Mannus – and Docherty admitted he is keen to get his name on the scoresheet for Rangers

“That is something I want to add to my game,” he said. “But first I am looking for consistency in my performance. If I am getting assists, then that is a goal for me. I love getting assists for players and I get a real buzz from it. If I am contributing, that is fine.”
