STEVEN GERRARD reckons he has assembled a top backroom team after getting down to work as Rangers boss.

The Liverpool legend confirmed the appointment of Gary McAllister as his assistant when he was unveiled at Ibrox last month.

Michael Beale, Tom Culshaw and Jordan Milsom have also made the move north of the border, while goalkeeping coach Colin Stewart has been retained at first team level.

And Gerrard is delighted to have tried and trusted personnel by his side as he prepares for his first day of pre-season action on Friday.

He told RangersTV: “The main thing was that they were my number one targets.

“When I knew Rangers were interested in sitting down, I had to look at the dynamics of the current staff that were in place and how I wanted to do it my way.

“The board were very supportive in making sure that I had my people that I was comfortable with. But also people that I think are going to improve things here, that the players are going to benefit from.

“They are all experts in their own certain way but they were my first targets that I went to and said ‘do you fancy taking this challenge on with me?’

“None of them had to think about it, it was all straight yesses across the board and together we are a team. There are no ones, twos, threes and fours, we are not interested.

“We are the first team staff at this football club and we want to be there as a support network for the players.

“Trust is important in any walk of life and I know that they have got my back and they know I have got theirs.

“The important thing is that they are experts and they are good enough in their roles to come to a club like this, with the demands, and I have got every confidence that they are going to deliver.

“They can’t wait to get going. It has been a long summer for them as well, they have known for a long time they are going to be coming and we are itching to get started and get on the training pitch.”
