TWO Scots have been included in the initial round of selections for Great Britain’s team for the World Judo Championships, which will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from the 20-27th September.

Sally Conway, who won Olympic bronze in 2016, headlines the team and she is joined by compatriot Sarah Adlington as part of the seven-strong squad, which also includes former World Championship medallists Nekoda Smythe-Davis and Natalie Powell.

Conway took a break from the sport following her Olympic medal-winning exploits two years ago but since returning, she has been in impressive form, winning the Paris Grand Slam in February, defeating world champion Chizuru Arai in the process.

The 31-year-old from Edinburgh then followed up her Paris victory by winning silver at the European championships and so will go into the World Championships later this year hoping that she can win her first medal at the event.

Adlington meanwhile, has overcome serious injury problems to battle her way back into the GB set-up, despite having to self-fund much of her competition and training programme, and she is in good form, including most recently winning silver at the European Judo Open earlier this month.

There will be further selections added to the team in August.
