STRIKER Adam Rooney has left Aberdeen to join National League outfit Salford City for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old ends a four-and-a-half year spell at Pittodrie, where he scored 87 goals in 194 appearances for the Dons.

He will lead the line for The Ammies next season under the guidance of former Scotland internationalist Graham Alexander as they target League Two football.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes said: "We wish Adam all the very best with his new venture and it is always with a heavy heart when you lose a good player who is also a really good person.

"Since I signed Adam four and a half years ago, he has given us nothing but good value and has been a fantastic boy to work with.”

Rooney scored eight goals in 32 Premiership appearances for Aberdeen last season as they finished in the runners-up spot for the fourth year in a row.

Salford City were taken over by former Manchester United players Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt in 2014 before Valencia owner Peter Lim bought a 50% stake in the club in September of that year.

They clinched promotion to the fifth tier of English football last season by winning the National League North title.
