LAURA MUIR missed out on the British mile record at the Anniversary Games in London yesterday but confirmed she hopes to go for the 800m-1500m double at the European Championships in Berlin in two weeks time.

Muir went into the weekend meet with the explicit aim of breaking Zola Budd’s 33-year-old record of 4 minutes 17.57 seconds and having fallen just 0.46 seconds short last year, the landmark certainly appeared within the Scot’s reach.

However, the 25-year-old ran out of steam on the final lap of yesterday’s race and she crossed the line in fifth place behind winner, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands.

The leaders set a blistering pace from the gun, completing the first 400m in just 63 seconds but as the field approached the bell, Muir began to look like she was struggling somewhat.

As the finish line approached, Hassan’s 5000m strength showed with the Dutch woman, who won European 1500m gold in 2014, tearing down the home straight to take victory in 4 minutes 14.71 seconds which put her into third place on the all-time list with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay in second and Hellen Obiri in third.

Muir crossed the line in 4 minutes 19.28 seconds and admitted she would liked to have performed better.

“I’m a bit disappointed but I went through the first part of the race too fast and when you do that, it catches up with you in the latter half of the race,” Muir said. “I know that the time is there, I just need to run it in the perfect way and I didn’t do that.”

Muir confirmed though that she has put herself up for selection for both the 800m and the 1500m at the European Championships, where she will aim to win her first outdoor major championship medals.
