At the age of 54, Laura Davies must have thought she had seen it all in her career but the next two weeks will present her with a new challenge.

Davies has been selected to represent GB at the European Championships at Gleneagles.

It is the first time golf has held such an event and the mixed team format, as well as men’s and women’s team battling it out for the first European Championship gold medals, will be all-new for Davies, who has racked up four Major wins as well as seven Ladies European Tour Order of Merit titles.

Also in the GB line-up are Scots Catriona Matthew, Michele Thomson and Richie Ramsay and Davies admits the uniqueness of the European Championships is hugely exciting and she can’t wait to get to Gleneagles in just over a week’s time where she will contest the women’s team event alongside her compatriot, Georgia Hall, who topped the 2017 Ladies European Tour Order of Merit.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Davies. “It’s always nice doing something different – and playing with Georgia, who’s playing really well at the moment, is great so hopefully we’ll represent GB well.”

Davies has shown signs of good form recently, although she has struggled with consistency. A spectacular start at the Ladies Scottish Open saw her reach four under par but a disappointing end to round one carried over into round two, with the Englishwoman ultimately missing the cut with a score of seven over par.

But a recent major win at the US Senior Women’s Open showed she still has it and she and Hall will be amongst the favourites for gold at Gleneagles, with the Englishwoman admitting that become the first European golf champions would be quite an addition to her CV.

“It would be amazing to win – you always want to win something new and a bit different,” she said. “It’s just nice that they’ve included golf in the event alongside all these other sports so it’s great to be a part of it and I’m really pleased to be there. It’s definitely going to be fun.”
