STEVEN Gerrard admitted last night he is impatient to complete his summer squad improvements – but won’t be rushed into making the wrong decisions on players. The Rangers manager has signed 10 new players already this close season but is still trying to strengthen in “one or two areas” to make sure he has two players to cover each position.

The Ibrox side, who face Aberdeen in a tough-looking Ladbrokes Premiership away match at Aberdeen on Sunday after tonight’s Europa League qualifying tie against Osijek, remained at an impasse with Hearts last night over their pursuit of their former striker Kyle Lafferty.

“Where are we, August 1?” said Gerrard. “We haven’t got much time left. I think every manager out there is in a rush. But at the same time, we won’t make rushed decisions. If the right person is not out there or the deal is not right or we can’t get it over the line, that’s just the way it is.

“We have to make sure the right people are coming in the door – it’s no secret we are trying to strengthen in one or two areas. The idea is to have two good players to cover each position. We are not far away from that.”

Scottish sides will still be able to loan players from English clubs after the Barclays Premier League and EFL transfer deadline expires in seven days’ time, but Gerrard does not want the club to be beholden to anyone else’s timeline. “We are hoping to do it ourselves,” he said. “We don’t want to be relying on when other people are done. We have our targets we want to bring in and we are looking to do it as quick as we can. The quicker we get them in, done, sorted, the quicker they settle, the quicker they get on board with how we want to play. The focus is very much on us and not what teams in England are doing. We just want to get our business done as quickly as we can.”

Gerrard welcomes Scott Arfield and Umar Sadiq into the squad for the Osijek tie and said last night that he feels striker Alfredo Morelos, who notched the only goal in the first leg in Croatia, is a ‘different player’ from the misfiring one he watched at points last season.

“I’m still learning what floats his boat,” said Gerrard. “He’s still getting used to me. He is working hard on his English and stuff. But I see him smiling and enjoying his training. And having watched from outside and what I am seeing now, I think you can see a different player. He is looking at it. And if we can keep him fit and sharp I have no doubt he will score goals for this football club. He is a threat and someone you wouldn’t like to play against when he is at it.”
