A CHORUS of online criticism has greeted the news that singer Lulu is to headline a concert to mark the start of the Commonwealth Games.

Website heraldscotland.com has been bombarded with negative comments about the choice of the 1960s pop star for the gig at Glasgow Green on July 23.

It will take place as the opening ceremony is under way at Celtic Park.

One user claimed that Lulu, who grew up in Dennistoun, was nothing more than a "Z-list" celebrity.

Jane Pollock wrote on the website: "Lulu ... is that the best we as a city can come up with ... a glorified pub singer?"

Another online user, James Fyfe added: "Honestly, is this the best that Glasgow can give us? Lulu?"

One reader even compared the booking to the controversial bid by organisers to blow up the city's Red Road flats as part of the festivities, which was later overturned.

Alex Armstrong posted: "The singing version of the Red Road flats. Presumably the Chuckle Brothers will be the warm up."

John Renfrew said: "With all due respect to Lulu, it is 2014. This is Z-list disappointment."

However, others spoke out in favour of the singer, with one reader posting: "You're being too harsh on Lulu. She can fair belt out a tune."

Patricia Calder added: "Some of the remarks about Lulu are rather mean-spirited.

"Whatever we think of her she puts on a good concert. To be able to dance the way she does at 65 is incredible."

Glasgow 2014 said they were delighted with the choice of performer.

A spokesman said: "As a Scottish performer with hits spanning four decades, Lulu will get the party started at Glasgow Green as the city celebrates the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony being staged just a mile away at Celtic Park."
