GLASGOW 2014's volunteers definitely make the Games, organisers have claimed.

The 15,000 helpers, who are known as Clydesiders, were selected after a record-breaking 50,800 people from the UK and beyond applied to have one of the posts.

They now have a variety of roles within the Commonwealth Games, such as in spectator services, transport and press operations.

Valerie Mitchell, head of the Games workforce, said the event could not have taken place without them.

She told a daily briefing: "As you'll see being around the city and beyond our venues, the volunteers definitely make the Games.

"When I'm out and about, people are speaking to me about it all the time, giving great feedback, saying how friendly the volunteers are and how helpful they are."
