LABOUR have welcomed assurances that the controversial chair of the Commonwealth, Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa, will play no formal role in the Glasgow Games.

But the Foreign Office has admitted he could still come to the event and attend a linked Commonwealth service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

Labour called on Foreign Secretary William Hague to ensure both events are not overshadowed by Mr Rajapaksa. His regime is accused of committing appalling human rights abuses against its own people. Despite international outcry President Rajapaksa became the chair-in-office of the Commonwealth last year.

The Foreign Office said it was "too early" to say if Mr Rajapaksa would come.

Police have been warned that there could be protests if Mr Rajapaksa attends.
