THE Red Road estate, built between 1964 and 1969, originally consisted of eight multi-storey blocks and was designed for 4,700 people.

Designed by Glasgow Corporation architect Sam Bunton, they were the highest multi-storeys in Europe although they were surpassed by the Barbican Estate in London in 1973. For most of the early residents, living in the flats meant a significant improvement in their living conditions. By the 1970s, the estate had gained a reputation for crime. By the time the 1980s had dawned, it had become clear the optimism surrounding high-rise housing had waned.

The first block was demolished by controlled explosion on June 10, 2012.
