THE Scottish men's gymnastics team won a thrilling silver to ensure the nation was celebrating a record Commonwealth Games medal tally last night.
The gymnastics team of Dan Keatings, Dan Purvis, Frank Baines, Adam Cox and Liam Davie took silver before an excited crowd at the SSE Hydro. England took gold.
The Scots created sporting history as it was the first medal for any Scottish gymnastics team in a Commonwealth Games.
And their medal helped take Scotland to 37 medals in these Games, smashing the previous record of 33.
Adam Cox said: "I loved it, every single second of it. I came out of retirement for this, and you know what, I couldn't think of a better way to end my gymnastics career.
"The crowd were fantastic and the boys were great. I am so proud of them."
Baines, above, added:"It's just an honour to be part of this team. They are the best bunch of lads you could ever hope to compete with.
"The crowd was amazing: they got behind you every step of the way.
"We had a few mistakes ourselves, but we kept on supporting each other and got through it and yes, we've come away with a silver medal."
The country's four previous gymnastics medals at Commonwealth level - most notably Steve Frew's gold in 2002 - have all been for individual successes.
The Scots started the day in second place, having completed the floor, rings and pommel-horse on Monday.
They secured their silver after the vault, the parallel bars and the high bar.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
