Joy and heartbreak merged as one for Scotland's bowlers at Kelvingrove yesterday with the men moving through to both the singles and fours knock-out stages, the women sadly losing in the triples quarter- finals and Lady Luck deserting them with the last bowl in the pairs, and the Para Sport triples relegated to the bronze medal play-off today.

Darren Burnett finished his section in pole position but had to overcome losing to Namibia's Willem Erasmus Esterhuizen 21-19. He led 19-16, but dropped a full house followed by a single to suffer his first defeat.

He made no such mistakes in the remaining two matches, beating Zambia's Harry Musonda and then Bobby Donnelly, from South Africa, to finish as the outright winner. In the first of today's knock-out singles Burnett meets Ireland.

In the fours, David Peacock, Neil Speirs, Paul Foster and Alex Marshall beat Wales 12-9 to top their group with a 100% record. They continue this morning against South Africa and are in the same half of the draw as Australia and Wales. In the other half, India meet Norfolk Island and England clash with Northern Ireland.

In the women's triples, Margaret Letham's rink were beaten 21-12 by South Africa in the quarter-finals.

In the pairs, Caroline Brown and Lorraine Malloy beat Norfolk Island 14-3, Brown trailing the jack with her last bowl to snatch victory. Then in their last section qualifier, against South Africa, they once again made a late charge. They held the shot for a drawn result which would have seen them move through and their South African opponents being bundled out. However, with her last bowl, Colleen Piketh played into the head, displaced the Scots bowl and when the dust settled found herself with a double and a match win.

In the Para Sport Open triples, Billy Allan, Michael Simpson and Kevin Wallace lost their semi-final match to New Zealand 13-9 with the Kiwis finishing strongly over the last three ends.
