Welsh swimmer Rob Holderness has his sights set on a Commonwealth Games medal despite a tough breaststroke field.

Holderness goes in the 50m, 100m and 200m when the Glasgow 2014 swimming action starts at Tollcross.

The 24-year-old finished sixth in the 200m in Delhi but he is a former British champion at 50m and is looking to have more to show for his efforts in Scotland.

"I'm going for medals," he said. "Obviously performance is what we are all looking for, but we are all going for medals. End of.

"The breaststroke is stacked but you have got to aim for the podium. I don't want to just aim for finals.

"There is a lot of pressure but the key guys have got to be Michael Jamieson, Christian Sprenger, Andrew Willis, Adam Peaty, Ross Murdoch. I'm going to have to take down at least three of them to get on to the podium. It will be exciting."

The Welsh swimmers have targeted six medals and Team Wales chef de mission Brian Davies is delighted with their attitude.

"It's really refreshing from a Welsh perspective to hear the boldness of these guys," Davies said. "It's based on evidence and performance.

"It's great to hear that. Too often in some of our sports we are too shy.

"So why not set bold targets and try to achieve?"

Davies has been happy with the way preparations have gone.

"Glasgow have done a fantastic job," he said. "The organisation has been first class.

"There are lots of little teething problems behind the scenes but nobody, including the athletes, gets to see those.

"These should be fantastic Games. The venues are world class and the athletes are world class - everybody is turning up.

"There's an over-subscription in the village, there is a challenge there for the organisers, and so far the experience has been brilliant."
