PRIVATE tenants in Glasgow have been warned against sub-letting their rented property during the Commonwealth Games.

It comes after a report claimed some one-bedroom apartments in the city were being advertised for rent at £1500 per night during the Games - more expensive than a suite at the Ritz.

Some homeowners in the city are expected to cash in on demand for accommodation, leading to fears private tenants might be tempted to take a risk by taking advantage of the expected boom in visitors.

Neil Thomson, who heads the Glasgow office of the letting agency DJ Alexander, said: "It might seem like a good idea to take a holiday or go home to mum and dad for the 11 days of the Games and make some money by sub-letting your flat.

"However doing so this summer, or at any other time, would be a serious breach of the lease conditions and put the tenant at risk of losing his or her deposit.

"In some cases that could even be the least-worst outcome. Sub-letting the property immediately invalidates buildings and home contents insurance so if a chip pan fire occurs and significant damage is done to the kitchen, then the head tenant will be held financially responsible."

Mr Thomson added that even owner-occupiers should be cautious.

He said: "If the property is mortgaged then they will be required to obtain permission from their lender. Those who own their homes outright will still need to contact their buildings insurer beforehand. Should they fail to do so and their home subsequently catches fire or sustains other serious damage, they could face a huge repair bill."
