Stephen Lavelle celebrated the greatest result of his career after making the semi-finals of the heavyweight competition and securing at least a bronze medal with a unanimous points win over India's Amritpreet Singh.

The Glasgow boxer saw a cut on his left eyebrow, sustained in his victory over Kody Davies of Wales in the previous round, reopen in the very first round against an awkward opponent with a sizeable advantage in terms of height and reach.

However, he landed with the cleaner punches throughout and will have another stitch sewn into his wound before his meeting with David Light of New Zealand in the last four on Friday evening.

"The eye is a bit of a concern, but it is never going to stop me," said Lavelle. "It won't stop me in my next fight and I will be winning there as well.

"Making sure of a bronze in front of my home crowd in my home city is fantastic.

"I have represented Scotland all over the world, but it doesn't get better than winning a medal in the Commonwealth games here.

"I have secured a bronze, but I hope that colour will turn to gold."
