Cycling : Mountain Bike

The new trails at Cathkin Braes have already been tried out by brave local mountain-biking fanatics and given an emphatic thumbs up, so it will be interesting to see what the elite cyclists make of Glasgow's newest cycling extravaganza.

The trails sit high on Glasgow's South Side, and riders will have stunning views across the city as they make their way along the varied and challenging terrain at break-neck speed.

The trails offer a whole new dimension to the existing Cathkin Braes Country Park, which was gifted to the city in 1887 by merchant James Dick, who stipulated that the open space most by retained in a natural state and open for public enjoyment.

Due to Dick making his fortune from rubberised shoe soles made from gutta-percha, the site has always been known locally as Gutty Park.

The course's key features - Brig O'Doom, Broken Biscuits and Clyde Climb - were named by young people following a local schools' competition.

In the longer term, the the trails will be used by local mountain bikers and for major competitions.
