Arbroath deliver show of strength

Arbroath proved their resolve on Saturday as they recorded an impressive Eastern Premier win over Falkland.

The reigning champions have suffered defeat three times this season and on each occasion have bounced back immediately, a trend which suggests they will not give up their title lightly.

A commanding 116-run success at Lochlands - which comprised centuries from Hamish Bartlett and Fraser Burnett - keeps Arbroath on the trail of leaders Aberdeenshire and Marc Petrie is looking for his side to find consistency as the second half of the season progresses.

That will be crucial given their Abroath's next two matches are tricky trips to the capital to face Carlton and Heriot's. "We have got to take the momentum from this win into our next game," said the Arbroath captain. "It was a very good performance from us with Hamish and Fraser both batting very well on a tricky pitch to get us an above-par score. We were ruthless with our bowling and never gave Falkland a chance."

Aberdeenshire were similarly convincing in their win against Heriot's. Harsha Cooray scored a 97-ball 102 not out to propel his side to 237-6, while Hayes van der Berg got the decisive wicket.

Forfarshire suffered a third consecutive defeat, meanwhile, as Watsonians emerged with a five-wicket win at Myreside and Carlton registered a 49-run victory against SMRH. Grange's match with Stoneywood-Dyce was washed-out.
