Future bright with young Warriors, insists Judd

TONY Judd is backing his triumphant Western Warriors to become Saltires stars of the future.

Judd's youthful side clinched their first Regional Series title on Sunday ahead of two-time champions Caley Highlanders and an experienced Eastern Knights outfit. And the Saltires No.2, who blooded a clutch of teenagers during the campaign, believes his side's success offers hope for the future.

Judd said: "I think the Western Warriors have proved there is a lot to be positive about in Scottish cricket. We weren't afraid to give some kids a chance and they responded brilliantly."We also had a great team spirit and a sense of togetherness, which you need if you're going to win things I'm not saying any of the youngsters are ready for the step up just yet, but they are heading in the right direction and will benefit from this season's experience."Under-19 players Scott McElnea, Alex Baum, Andrew Umeed and Gavin Main all took part in the Warriors' campaign. Sunday's easy win over the Knights has given them an unassailable lead at the top of the table with one game remaining. Meanwhile, Judd will take charge of the Scotland Lions tomorrow when they face MCC in a three-day encounter at Ayr.The MCC side includes former Saltires captains Craig Wright and Ryan Watson while Grange batsman Sanjay Patel and Carlton wicketkeeper Toby Bailey are also included.Scotland's team is packed with first-team men ahead of next month's crucial Intercontinental Cup match with Canada.Arbroath all-rounder Calvin Burnett has forced his way into the team following a successful outing in last week's A international against Ireland.Judd said: "The side has been picked with the I-Cup in mind.
