CRICKET Scotland have shelved plans for a new national centre due to lack of funds, writes William Dick.

The governing body last year unveiled an ambitious proposal to move to a purpose-built home at New Williamfield, Stirling. But yesterday the scheme, which also involved Stirling Council and Stirling Cricket Club, was hit for six when officials admitted they had failed to produce a funding package.

A Cricket Scotland statement read: "One of the key elements of the project has been funding the costs of constructing and fitting out the centre.

"Various funding models and sources have been investigated, but it has not been possible to find a solution which could have worked for Cricket Scotland. As a result, Cricket Scotland has, regretfully, had to withdraw from the planned project.

"Cricket Scotland would like to put on record its gratitude to Stirling Council and Stirling County Cricket Club for all their support in trying to deliver the project."

Despite the setback, Cricket Scotland insist they still have a long-term ambition to build a national centre.
