Promoted Glenrothes want Watson to keep on playing

Glenrothes, who will play in the National League for the first time next season, hope to persuade Ryan Watson to delay his second retirement.

The former Saltires captain helped the Fifers reach the elite for the first time in their history with play-off wins against Dundee HSFP and Edinburgh Accies at the weekend to secure a place in the Eastern Division 1 of the Cricket Scotland Conference next season.

Ian Dale, their captain, said: "For a club of our size, being promoted to the national set-up is a huge achievement. It shows what hard work and a great team spirit can do. Ryan got runs and wickets in both the play-off games but told me he was feeling old after. I haven't had a chance to speak to him about his plans but I hope he'll play on."Watson announced his retirement at the end of last season only to be persuaded back by the ambitious Fifers."Ryan didn't play that many games but having him around the club was a boost to everyone," said Dale. "He has played at the very highest level and his knowledge of the game was a help to us. He is also still a great player so hopefully he'll be part of our squad next season."Glenrothes will join Falkland and Freuchie in the Eastern Division 1 and intend to make their mark. "It's great for Fife that there is another club from this area up and the derbies will suit everyone," said Dale. "We won't make any rash predictions but I've been speaking to a few people who know what the standard is like and they think we'll do okay. There is a good momentum at the club and we intend to keep things heading in the right direction."
