If the perception of footballers is so poor, why are players expected to be role models? There are always two sides

There is absolutely no doubt that the actions of professional footballers can have an influence on people, both positive and negative.

Unlike doctors, police officers and teachers, though, footballers do not sign up to become role models. Generally, they inherit the role unwittingly as they progress in the game, unaware of the implications of their fame.
