ROBBIE Muirhead, the Dundee United striker, is in the running for UEFA’s Goal of the Season award for a long-distance strike while playing for Scotland under-19s. Muirhead, who scored his 35-yarder against Norway, is joined on the shortlist by Neymar, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and six others.

“I dropped into midfield, got the ball and turned,” Muirhead said of his goal, which can be seen on the UEFA website. “Nobody closed me down, so I just thought to myself ‘Hit it’, and that’s exactly what I did. I was surprised I caught it as sweet as I did.”

Aaron Ramsay of Arsenal and Erik Lamela of Tottenham have also made the shortlist, along with Vitorino Antunes of Dynamo Kiev, Vasyl Kobin of Metalist Kharkiv and two Belgian internationals, Mariam Abdulai Toloba of the women’s under-17 team and Kevin de Bruyne of the senior men’s side.

Viewers of the website can vote for their favourite goal. The result will be announced on 27 August, before the draw for the group stages of the Champions League.
