The transfer window in England is creaking to a close and the usual frenzy of last gasp purchases will roar on until the deadline arrives at 6pm tonight.

Southampton made a major move by snapping up Celtic’s Dutch defender, Virgil Van Dijk, on a four-year deal for a reported fee of £11.5 million.

Van Dijk, who has been pursued by the south coast club for almost a year, will become Southampton’s eighth signing of the summer.

With Van Dijk marching into the Saints, former Celtic midfielder, Victor Wanyama, could be heading out of St Mary’s with rumours of a move to Tottenham Hotspur still circulating.

Spurs are set to be busy on deadline day and could be set to make a third bid of £22 million for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino. The White Hart Lane club are also mulling over a late move for Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez, who could command a fee of around £15 million. They are also looking across London at West Ham United midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate.

The Hammers, meanwhile, are poised to secure Chelsea winger Victor Moses on a season-long loan deal and could capture Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor in a late raid. West Ham are also showing an interest in Hull City’s former Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic and could be prepared to fork out around £3 million for the Croatian.

Manchester City’s Sami Nasri could be on his way to Serie A after Juventus expressed an interest in the 28-year-old midfielder.

In the red half of the city, David De Gea's £29m move from Manchester United to Real Madrid has collapsed because the necessary paperwork was not submitted in time.

As part of the deal to sell De Gea to Real, United were planning to bring Keylor Navas in the opposite direction.

In Scotland, it has emerged that Hibernian are chasing Chelsea youngster Islam Feruz on a season-long loan deal. The 19-year-old has held talks with manager Alan Stubbs and is mulling over a switch.
