Partick Thistle fans will have the chance to get their hands on a one-off piece of club memoribilia this Saturday, as the club gives away limited edition scarves.

Thistle have teamed up with Pittsburgh-based artist Jon Rubin to create the design, and the first 2,000 supporters through the gates for the clash against Motherwell at Firhill this weekend will take away the unique piece of merchandise for free.

With “You Don’t Know Who You Are” on one side, and “We Are Thistle” on the other, it is the latest in the series of giveaways planned.

The last, in October, was a football designed by graffiti artist, Barry McGee.

The idea of partnering art and football was the brainchild of Mike Wilkins, managing partner of the Jags' main sponsor, Kingsford Capital Management.

Talking about the Rubin scarf, he said: “A lot has been happening at Partick Thistle, both on and off the pitch, since we first got involved, and it is something we as a company are really excited to be part of.

"Joining up with artists like Jon Rubin, who immediately grasped that concept and reflected it in the scarf, has been extremely exciting.

"The feedback from fans, especially those with a keen eye for art, has been very positive so far. It started with David Shrigley in the design of the, now world famous, Kingsley and moved on to Barry McGee last month with his fantastic football.

“The scarf is supposed to be a practical, hands on piece of art that people can enjoy looking at but can also use when they come to Firhill to support Thistle. More than anything else I hope supporters enjoy wearing them and really buy into the concept."

Rubin, whose past work includes a project which saw him start a radio station in an abandoned neighbourhood that played only the sound of an extinct bird, jumped at the opportunity to be part of the project.

He said: “I’m a huge sports fan myself, so I was excited to be asked to participate. After doing a lot of research, Partick Thistle is the exact type of team that I tend to root for—the scrappy underdog punching above their weight.

“When I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was always a fan of the region’s lower budget franchise, the Oakland A’s, over the high payroll neighbouring club, the San Francisco Giants. You didn’t have to be wealthy to go to the A’s games, and when the team did well, you knew it was in spite of the financial odds against it. As an artist, this was a story I could relate to.

“I mostly create works in the public realm, so found the idea of creating a giveaway for Partick Thistle fans an unique opportunity and challenge. I’m quite excited to be part of this project.”

Ian Maxwell, Partick Thistle Managing Director, added: “Our previous artist collaborations have proven extremely popular and I’m certain this will be the same. It has been great to be working with such talented and creative people and I only hope that our supporters continue to really buy into the whole project

“This is the second giveaway like this and there will be several more between now and the end of the season. With our weather, it's a practical piece of art which also reinforces some of the messages we have been putting out there as a club, like #WeareThistle. I for one hope to see these scarves coming back to Firhill for several years to come and I’m sure our fans will really get on board and support what we’re trying to do.”
