DEREK McInnes, the Aberdeen manager, will make a decision on whether to sign Daniel Adejo, the Nigerian defender who has been on trial at Pittodrie this week, after watching him in an under-20 game against Inverness Caledonian Thistle today.

However, Tony Docherty, the Premiership challengers’ assistant, yesterday admitted he has been impressed with the 26-year-old, who spent six years at Italian club Reggina, in training and in a development league victory over Hibs in Peterhead on Tuesday.

McInnes is keen to strengthen his squad at right back as Shay Logan, who is out of contract at the end of the 2015/16 campaign and has hinted he may return to England next season, is currently the only player he has who specialises in the position.

“He (Adejo) played in a reserve game on Tuesday when we beat Hibs 1-0 and did well,” said Docherty. We had a recovery day yesterday and he trained with us there and he will play in another reserve game against Inverness tomorrow.

“After that, once Derek’s had a chance to see him as well, we will make a decision on that. But he is certainly a player who we are paying attention to. He has got a lot of experience and he has got pedigree. We will make a decision after Friday.

“He is a good defender. He has certainly got that experience and he can pay at the level. Having watched him in training, he looks a very competitive player and a good defender. There is no harm in having a look. We always think that. If something comes of it great, if nothing comes of it fine.”

McInnes bolstered his squad at Aberdeen in the January transfer window with the signing of Simon Church, the 33-times capped Welsh internationalist, on loan from Milton Keynes Dons until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old is hoping to do well enough in Scotland to be included in Chris Coleman’s pool for the Euro 2016 finals in France in the summer and has started well. He scored in a 2-1 win over Celtic in his first game and was a key player in a 4-3 victory against St. Johnstone at the weekend.

Docherty believes the presence of Church will enable Adam Rooney, who has already scored the same number of goals in the Premiership as he did last season, to net even more frequently for a club which is level on points with Celtic at the top of the league table.

“The first thing I would say about Simon is that he is a great lad,” he said. “He has come in and he has fitted into the squad right away. He has a good personality and is a good type to have in the dressing room in terms of what he has contributed.

“He has come straight in and in the Celtic game we saw that he is a good striker with good link-up play. He is pacy, works in behind and is a very good finisher. He has definitely added to the squad.

“He scored a goal against Celtic and was involved in most of the goals against St. Johnstone. He has brought a goal threat and is someone who can hopefully help Adam Rooney who is in such a rich vein of form.”

Docherty continued: “Adam has scored something like 11 goals in 15 games which is fantastic. That is him equalled his tally for last season already. He scored 18 last season and he is up to 18 at the moment.

“Simon has certainly come in and looked at him in training and looked at the way the two of them interact. There is a wee dynamic thing between them. Hopefully he is helping Adam and is contributing to our goals as well.

“We’re very fortunate here with the type of striker we’ve got that we can play various formations. Adam has played wide left in the last couple of games and we’re spoiled by him in that he will always do a job for the team no matter what he is asked to do and still contributes goals.

“We have an adaptable squad here and any player who arrives has to fit in but so far Simon has done that. He is a hungry player with a real pedigree but he wasn’t getting the game time he wanted down the road. But I can see the enthusiasm and desire to be in that squad at the Euros in him.”

Meanwhile, Docherty revealed that Andrew Considine, who injured himself in the warm-up before the St. Johnstone game last weekend, and Willo Flood, who has resumed training, are in contention to play in the Premiership match against Inverness in the Highlands on Monday.

“Andy is touch and go at the moment,” he said. “But there is good news. When he did it in the warm-up we were worried about it because it was a calf, but it is certainly nowhere near as bad as we thought. He is going to the physio just now and he is touch and go for Monday.”
