ALAN ARCHIBALD hopes his Partick Thistle injury problems won’t affect their preparations for the new Premiership campaign.

The Jags got their season off to a winning start on Friday night as Kris Doolan netted the only goal of the game in the 1-0 Betfred Cup win over Airdrieonians. Next up for Archibald’s side is the visit of Queen of the South this weekend and top spot in Group E is up for grabs at Firhill.

The Thistle boss still has a selection headache as several players continue on the road to recovery, though, and admits it is a far from ideal situation as he looks to progress in the cup and get his squad up to speed for the new top flight term.

“The two goalies – Scully and Cerny – are still doubtful. I hope one of them will be able to go on the bench at least,” Archibald said. “Hopefully they won’t be called upon because our kids are over in Ireland for a tournament with the 20s.

“Muzzy (Mustapha Dumbuya) is obviously long term, Danny Devine has got a knock now as well but hopefully he will be OK. Abdul is still out, Gary Fraser, Stuart Bannigan, Christie Elliott are all still out. David Amoo has got a chance of being back in the picture.

“It is a problem for us. Most teams are trying to make a few changes from game to game but we won’t be able to do that. Middle to front we are OK but defensively, Friday’s game was their first 90 minutes. They had to go and play 90 minutes, that is the way we are and defensively we are really short.

“We can mix things up a bit middle to front and we will do hopefully. It is a game we want to win and it is probably a must-win now with the way the group is working out. Queen of the South are a very strong side.”
