TOM ROGIC has been urged to reject any big money moves into the English Premier League and stay at Celtic, by Australia boss Ange Postecoglou, writes Mark Walker.
The Socceroo midfielder has been in outstanding form for the Parkhead side and has thrived under Brendan Rodgers.
He's been linked with eventually moving down south to England to join a big club.
However, Australia boss Postecoglou reckons the 24-yeae-old shouldn't be in any rush and can continue to improve in Scottish football.
He said: "I think the key for Tommy is that he just keeps progressing.
"He’s happy at Celtic. Celtic are a big club, they play in the Champions League this year, they’re doing really well in their domestic league, so they’re likely to play Champions League next year as well.
"So if that continues and he continues progressing, we’re in no real hurry for him. I think people forget this has been his first real season of any real consistent play.
"I think next year will be a big year for Tommy in both club football and the international front and I think he’s ready for it."
And he's defended Rogic amid criticism over his fitness since he often gets subbed.
He said: "We’ve given him some hard tests this year in some pretty tough conditions. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but for us it was necessary for him to experience that so he can be ready for what’s ahead.
"He’s getting there. I think two out of the last three games for Celtic he’s played 90 minutes. It’s just sometimes Tommy is a very offensive player and sometimes in a game he needs to be taken off because the manager needs more a defensive style.
"But in terms of national team we’ve got no issue with him playing the full 90 minutes. With Tommy the more games he plays the better he gets."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
