RANGERS fan group Club 1872 has seen a membership surge in the aftermath of the deal to buy out controversial Ibrox shareholder Mike Ashley.

Chairman Dave King revealed details of a new merchandise agreement between the Gers and Ashley-owned retail firm Sports Direct last month.

And the Newcastle United chief then sold his entire 8.92 per cent stake in Rangers International Football Club plc as his long-running association with the Light Blues came to an end.

Club 1872 shelled out £1million to purchase half of the billionaire’s holding, with businessman Julian Wolhardt picking up the remaining 4.45 per cent in a seven-figure agreement.

The deal saw the supporter organisation become the second largest investors at Ibrox with almost 11 per cent of the shares in RIFC plc.

On Saturday, the group vowed to play their part in any fight against moves that could see Rangers stripped of honours following the conclusion of the Big Tax Case at the Supreme Court.

More than 700 fans have now joined Club 1872 over the last fortnight as the group attempt to further increase their Light Blues influence.

Euan MacFarlane from the Club 1872 Membership and Fan Engagement working group said: "It has been a really exciting few weeks for Club 1872 and its members.

“We've been delighted to see significant increases in new and re-joining members and it is vital we maintain and build on this momentum.

“Our Fan Engagement group are working with the board to communicate an events roadmap including meeting our supporters clubs, engaging with lapsed members as well as increasing our presence on match days.

“We look forward to sharing the long term vision for the organisation and the upcoming projects with prospective members.

“Hopefully the broader Rangers support who have been pleased with the recent share purchase and stability at board room level will give serious consideration to joining us."
