ANDERLECHT will have club legend Nicolas Frutos in charge for their Champions League Group match with Celtic but the Argentinian coach has been told he will not be given the job on a permanent basis.

The Belgian champions sacked Rene Weiler after a dismal start to the season – their worst for 19 years. Frank de Boer, recently sacked by Crystal Palace, is on their shortlist and the former Rangers defender topped a fans’ poll to replace Weiler, but Anderlecht are also keen on Gent head coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck.

Sporting director Herman Van Holsbeeck said: “I think Nicolas will evolve as a top coach one day, but he knows the board are looking for a world-class candidate and he needs time to learn. His advantage is that he knows Anderlecht’s DNA and is loved by our supporters so we can hopefully get our fans back to actually supporting the team.”

Meanwhile, there was a blow for another of the teams in Celtic’s group with confirmation that Manuel Neuer, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper, has been ruled out until 2018 after he sustained a broken foot in training on Monday.

The injury is a recurrence of the hairline fracture to a metatarsal in his left foot that he picked up during the Champions League quarter-final second-leg defeat to Real Madrid in April.

The 31-year-old underwent successful surgery on Tuesday morning and has had a plate fitted – which will rule him out for four months.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “Manuel Neuer has sustained another injury and we’re incredibly sorry for him. The operation went perfectly, which is the most important thing for now. We and our captain are now looking to the future. Manuel will be back to his previous best and available to us again in January.”
