JASON HOLT believes interim Rangers boss Graeme Murty has all the qualities to forge a career in the dugout if he misses out on a first team berth at Ibrox.
The 43-year-old has taken charge of six matches in recent weeks after being asked to step back onto the touchline following the sacking of Pedro Caixinha.
The win over Aberdeen on Sunday could prove to be Murty’s last game as the Gers board look to clinch a deal for Derek McInnes in the coming days.
And Holt has been impressed with the job that the Under-20s boss has done second time around at Ibrox.
He said: “Every manager has got different ideas, philosophies and perspective on things.
“Like I say, he has come in and kept things relatively simple, which is what he has had to do because it is a difficult situation and he has not got a lot of time to change anything. He has been great.
“It is not really for me to say [if he should be involved with the first team]. All I can say is that since he has been in temporary charge of the squad he has been great and the players have enjoyed working under him.
“Of course we would welcome working with Graeme for a longer period of time but, like I say, that is not for the players to comment and make a decision on.
“I certainly think [he could be a manager]. You have seen in the spells that he has taken over the first team at Rangers that he has certainly got the ability and the credentials and the attributes you need to become a manager. I think that is there to see.”
After seeing off Hearts and Partick Thistle in his first two matches at the helm, Murty has helped Rangers bounce back from their successive defeats to Hamilton and Dundee by leading them to back-to-back wins against Aberdeen.
He was given a warm reception by supporters at Pittodrie on Sunday and Holt admits the Gers squad have appreciated his efforts once again.
He said: “I have said before that since Murts has come in he has been great and all the boys really enjoy working under him.
“It was a difficult situation for him and the players appreciate that. The only thing we can give him is 100 per cent.
“We have given that and he has given the same to us. It is good when things come together and we get these kind of results.
“It is a difficult situation to be in when he is stepping up from the Under-20s but he has handled it really well.
“The least we can give him is 100 per cent hard work and we have given that. He gives us the same and tries to put his ideas across in a short space of time. In the past week, it has showed in the results.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
