GRAEME MURTY has told Greg Docherty he doesn’t need to try too hard to impress as he looks to make his mark with Rangers.
The midfielder was handed his first Premiership start for his boyhood heroes against former club Hamilton on Sunday.
He was culpable for Accies’ first goal as his failed clearance allowed Darren Lyon to give Martin Canning’s side a shock lead.
But he recovered to turn in an accomplished performance overall as the Light Blues moved up to second spot with a 5-3 win at the SuperSeal Stadium.
And boss Murty believes the 21-year-old will go from strength to strength as he settles into life at Ibrox.
He said: “I think in the first half he was guilty of feeling the occasion a bit too much.
“He was trying to be everything, everyone and everything across the pitch so we tried to restrain his role in the second half where he was seeing the game in front of him more and he was more structured.
“I thought you saw the best of him at times where he actually goes from that position, when the game is in front of him, he goes and presses the ball and passes it cleanly. He was much, much better.
“But, the challenge now is to be cleaner and tidier on the ball. He needs to complete more passes, shift the ball faster.
“You can see that in training with him. At the moment, he is trying to be almost too precise and too much a Rangers player.
“He is going to grow into that. All he needs to do is trust himself.
“When he sees a pass, go and complete it. He is almost taking another touch to make doubly sure that he completes the pass.
“He doesn’t need to. He needs to trust his ability and our training, the tempo we play at, will improve him.
“It is a first game for him, a nice first game for him and he is another one that I think you are just seeing at the start of his Rangers career. He will get better from here.”
