ST MIRREN fans unfurled a banner reading, ‘Five years to the day players became legends, now it’s your turn’ at Palmerston on Saturday, to mark the anniversary of their League Cup win back in 2013.
And while Saints convincing 3-1 victory over Queen of the South might not match their 3-2 triumph over Hearts to seal their first piece of silverware in 26 years, the way they’ve cruised into pole position for the title with eight games left may earn the current Saints squad a place in Buddies folklore.
If they do go on to clinch the Championship, which requires 15 points now thanks to Livingston and Dundee United drawing at the weekend, the odds are stacked in their favour next year to remain in the Premiership.
After the Buddies troubles in recent years - falling to relegation two seasons later and almost going down to the third tier for the first time in their history, this year is a welcome return to the Saints supporters.
And for St Mirren midfielder Kyle Magennis, that day doesn’t seem too far away.
He said: “It was brilliant to win again for them [the Saints supporters] on a day that means so much to them.
“Hopefully we can give them another day like that again, I can see it coming myself.”
The 19-year-old is one of three Saints players, alongside Lewis Morgan and Liam Smith, who flew out to Andorra yesterday with the Scotland under-21s side.
With St Mirren not in action this weekend, it is a good chance for Magennis to put his stamp on the international side, after impressing for the under-20s last summer at the Toulon Tournament.
And he will be hoping to impress under-21s manager Scot Gemmill when the two sides play on Friday. “I don’t know much about Andorra, I actually thought it would be a nice warm trip but I’ve just been told otherwise,” Magennis said.
“There are a lot of great players there, a lot of them older than me, so personally it is a brilliant achievement to even be picked. I worked with the manager in Toulon last year so he knows what I can do so hopefully he plays me. Scot is a brilliant manager, he is very knowledgeable of the game and he is very easy to talk to.”
