FORMER Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas apologised to Hoops supporters as he backed Brendan Rodgers to fill the managerial vacancy at Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger announced on Friday that he will step down at the Emirates after 22 years in charge at the end of the season.

The Northern Irishman, who previously had spells in charge of Swansea City and Liverpool in the English top-flight, has been named among the bookies' early favourites for the role.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Nicholas outlined why he believes that the Parkhead boss would be a good fit in North London.

"I apologise to fellow Celtic fans but Brendan Rodgers has to be in the frame," he said.

"He's nearly won the Premier League title, probably should've done, at a massive club that understands pressure, style, class, standards.

"Then he comes to Celtic and he's just grown and grown, he's on the verge of another double Treble.

"I know he says he's still got work to do - that could be in Europe.

"But Brendan Rodgers for me has to be in the frame for Arsenal for the style, the qualities he's had and now the experience that he's gathered.

"There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that he fits the criteria."
