Australian playmaker Tom Rogic has declared that he could be a Celt for life after penning a five-year deal with the club on Thursday afternoon.

The 25-year-old turned his back on offers from the Premier League to stay with Brendan Rodgers’ side, rebuffing the expectation that he would wait until after the World Cup to assess the options open to him.

Instead, Rogic has committed himself to the club and can envisage seeing out the length of his deal.

“Of course, I would like that,” he said. “Football can change for better or worse very quickly.

“But I just want to play here for as long as I can – and keep enjoying the success.

“We play an attractive brand of football but ultimately the most important thing is success and we have managed to win a number of trophies in recent years so hopefully we can add to that. I am very happy here, very settled, I am enjoying my football and I am delighted to stay.

“There’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of ups and down but I think I can reflect on the past five years and be proud of what I have achieved. If I can keep continuing and developing there’s no reason why the next five can’t be more successful.”

Rogic has taken on cult status within the Celtic support for the quality of his goals and also his tendency to score them on the biggest stage.

However, the midfielder has acknowledged that there was a period when he did wonder whether or not he would make the grade with the Parkhead club.

Signed by Neil Lennon from Central Coast Mariners in 2013, Rogic returned to Australia for a loan spell and then faced some uncertainty as he struggled with the more physical elements of the game.

“I came here just aged 20,” he recalled. “I was young and had a lot to learn and I think the player and the person who walked in the door here five years ago has progressed and matured both on and off the pitch.

“Sometimes in football things work out in a different way. It can change very quickly for better or worse. That seems like a long time ago and it was a different part of my career. It was a testing time learning a bit about myself as a player and as a person and it certainly helped me shape me to get to this point today. Across the whole 5.5 years since I signed I have learned a lot and I am happy with where we are today.

“Wanting it isn’t enough. You need to have a lot to be successful in this business. There are a lot of us and downs in football and a lot of times that test you. This is one of the pleasant times and a moment to be proud of but it is not something to rest on. I want to keep working hard.

“There is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes. We have a great team and a great squad.

“I guess I’ve been fortunate in a couple of moments where it’s fallen to me or I’ve contributed a small part. But it’s a collective group that group that work for these moments.”

Celtic captain Scott Brown will be honoured with a testimonial game tomorrow afternoon with the Republic of Ireland heading to Celtic Park and Rogic has lauded both the leadership of his fellow midfielder and the input of Rodgers into his game.

“He’s one of a kind,” he said. “I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s one of the few left in the first team dressing room from when I first walked into the club.

“He’s been a massive part of my time here, an incredible leader on and off the pitch. He’s a great role model and a great friend. It makes my job easier playing alongside him.

“The manager has been a massive part of what the club has done over the past few years and he has certainly taken the club to a whole new level. Playing under him is great for a player and I feel as though I am learning off him every day.”
