STEVEN GERRARD is closing in on a move to bring former Liverpool team-mate Jon Flanagan to Rangers ahead of the new campaign.

The right-back is currently a free agent following his departure from Anfield this summer and is on Gerrard’s list of targets as he bids to bolster his Light Blues ranks.

The 38-year-old has added six players to his squad already and has spent recent days putting the Gers through their paces at their pre-season camp in Spain.

Gerrard admitted last week that he is targeting reinforcements across the park and Flanagan is now on course to become the latest arrival at Ibrox.

The 25-year-old was handed a community service order in January after being convicted of assaulting his girlfriend.

Liverpool condemned Flanagan ‘in the strongest possible terms’ and he spent the second half of the season on loan with Championship side Bolton.

A statement from the club said: “We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the player’s actions during the events that took place resulting in this criminal conviction.

“It leaves his own reputation damaged and, through association, he has severely let down the club he had previously represented with distinction.

“We have expressed to him our disappointment and anger that he has failed to live up to the values of Liverpool Football Club, in this specific instance.”

Flanagan made nine appearances for Bolton but was released from Liverpool at the end of the campaign.

And now the Scouser is set to be given the chance to resurrect his career with the Light Blues and become the seventh signing of the summer at Ibrox.
