Dick Advocaat last night stepped down as Serbia coach after a 3-1 home defeat by Denmark in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.
The result leaves Serbia joint bottom in Group I alongside Armenia with just one point from three games.
Former Rangers manager Advocaat said: "The pressure which was everywhere to be seen was too much to bear by this team and I had never faced such a difficult situation in my entire career. Serbia have to move on immediately and find a better way."
Defeat by the Danes, who lead the group, in an empty stadium left Serbia's qualification hopes in the balance and they still await UEFA's final verdict on last month's home qualifier against Albania, which was abandoned over crowd trouble. Serbia were awarded a 3-0 walkover but also had three points docked, with the FSS appealing the latter part of the verdict, after a drone stunt triggered a player brawl and a pitch invasion by Serbian fans who attacked Albanian players.
Serb media have touted former international midfielder Dejan Stankovic as a long-term successor, while Under-21 coach Radovan Curcic is expected to step in for Tuesday's away friendly with Greece. Serbia's next two qualifiers are away to Portugal in March and Denmark in June.
San Marino, joint bottom of the world rankings alongside Bhutan, ended a run of 61 consecutive defeats in all competitions when they held Estonia to a goalless draw in their Euro 2016 qualifier.
It was also the part-timers' first point in the European Championship qualifying competition since they began taking part in 1990.
Keeper Aldo Simoncini was the hero as he kept Estonia at bay in the Group E game and helped San Marino keep a clean sheet for only the third time ever.
Despite last night's success, they are still waiting for their first goal since Pierangelo Manzaroli replaced Giampaolo Mazza as coach in February.
Young gun Isco scored the pick of the goals as holders Spain strolled to a 3-0 home victory over Belarus in Euro 2016 qualifying Group C.
Spain dominated from the start in Huelva and Isco fired them ahead in the 18th minute when he curled an exquisite shot into the top corner, the 22-year-old Real Madrid midfielder's debut goal for La Roja on his first start.
Sergio Busquets cracked in a second a minute later, Pedro made it 3-0 after a well-worked move 10 minutes into the second half.
The Barcelona forward came close to a second late on when he struck an angled shot against the post.
Liechtenstein ended a 10-year wait for a competitive away win when they beat Moldova 1-0 in their Euro 2016 qualifier. Franz Burgmeier curled a free kick into the top left corner in the 74th minute to leave Liechtenstein with four points from four games in Group G, only one behind Russia.
It was Liechtenstein's first competitive win since they beat Lithuania 2-0 in a Euro qualifier in 2011 and their first away from home since thrashing Luxembourg 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in October 2004.
Moldova are bottom of the group with one point.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
