Phil Bardsley is a major injury doubt for Scotland's Euro 2016 qualifier with the Republic of Ireland and friendly with England after the right-back was forced off just nine minutes into Stoke City's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old, who was recalled to the Scotland squad following the ankle injury suffered by recognised right-back Alan Hutton, hobbled off at White Hart Lane with a groin complaint. It means that Steven Whittaker is now expected to play at right-back.

Craig Bryson of Derby County had already been forced to withdraw from the squad due to a hip injury, with club-mate Johnny Russell called up in his place.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes said: "Phil Bardsley tweaked his groin."

Scotland's opponents on Friday also have question marks over players following Sunday's Premier League action.

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill is sweating over the fitness of James McCarthy and Marc Wilson.

Everton midfielder McCarthy managed to play the full 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Sunderland but manager Roberto Martinez revealed after the game that the former Hamilton player had picked up a hamstring strain.

Centre-half Wilson, who has started all three of Ireland's Euro 2016 Group D qualifying matches alongside John O'Shea at centre-back, was substituted after 26 minutes of Stoke's win at Tottenham with a similar problem.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes said: "Marc Wilson pulled up with a hamstring."

Martinez said of McCarthy: "It is a concern, he needs assessing and hopefully it is just fatigue."
