Rangers defender Bilel Mohsni says he would love to win his first senior medal by lifting the Ramsdens Cup - despite admitting he had never even heard of the competition until a few weeks ago.

The 26-year-old Frenchman netted the opener in Tuesday's 3-0 win over Queen of the South at Palmerston as Ally McCoist's men booked their place in the lower-league tournament's semi-finals.

The former Southend and Ipswich centre-half secured his switch to Ibrox this summer after impressing on trial but arrived in Scotland without packing any significant silverware.

Now with either Annan, Raith or Stenhousmuir to come in the last four, he hopes to put that right by making the Ramsdens Cup the first piece in his medal collection.

Mohsni said: "I had never heard of the Ramsdens Cup before this season. But I have learned that at Rangers it's important to win every game.

"This is a competition and we want to win it. I came here to win trophies and win silverware - this is no different.

"I have only won one cup in my career when I was younger so I want to win this one.

"It would be good for the fans too because they have been tremendous since I came here. The backing we got on Tuesday night was incredible and we need to give something back to them.

"It would be special to go and get my first senior medal."

Mohsni has now bagged two goals in two appearances for the Ibrox men after their transfer embargo expired, freeing McCoist to select who he likes.

Perhaps more importantly, however, are the early signs of a partnership that the 6ft 3ins Parisian seems to have struck with skipper Lee McCulloch in the centre of defence.

The area was a weak spot for Rangers last term and Mohsni - who has already been compared to former Ibrox ball-playing centre-halves Lorenzo Amoruso and Madjid Bougherra - hopes he can be a cure to their ills at the back.

He said: "That's me scored two goals in two games and I am very happy. I didn't imagine at the start of the season that this would be possible.

"I am very happy because I don't score a lot of goals. I didn't score at all last season.

"I didn't feel right in my own mind last season and that was a problem. But I am in a much happier place now and it is showing on the field.

"I enjoy scoring goals but my job is defending so the clean sheet against Queen of the South was just as pleasing from my point of view.

"I know Rangers had some problems last season but we are working towards putting things right. It is still very early in the season but I feel we are playing well.

"I am tall and I know I can win headers. I try to dominate the defence if I can."

On the comparisons with former Light Blue favourites Amoruso and Bougherra, he added: "I have heard people comparing me to Lorenzo and also Madjid.

"I am very pleased about this because they were great players for this club and they achieved so much in their time here.

"I would like to achieve what they did but it's still very early in my Rangers career.

"But it's good when you hear people say nice things about you. These guys played in the Champions League and were big players for Rangers.

"I used to watch Lorenzo in the Champions League and I know he used to play like I do.

"I used to play in midfield when I was younger which is why I like to get on the ball. It was only when I became taller that they moved me back into defence.

"But I am comfortable on the ball. No one has told me to stay back - I always try and come forward.

"Someone always covers me so I am not worried when I come forward."
