Celtic will take on Spanish champions Real Madrid in Philadelphia on August 11, the club have confirmed.

The game at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of American Football side Philadelphia Eagles, is part of the 2012 World Football Challenge which takes place this summer in North America.

Jose Mourinho, the Real coach, was in charge of Porto when they beat the Parkhead club in the 2003 UEFA Cup final in Seville, a match in which Neil Lennon, the Celtic manager, played in midfield.

Peter Lawwell, the Parkhead club's chief executive, told the club's website: "This is a magnificent event for Celtic Football Club to be involved in and one which again demonstrates the strength and influence of the Celtic brand on a global scale. This match will allow us to promote Celtic and, of course, Scottish football across the USA, something we have done for a number of years with great success.

"We have enjoyed tremendous footballing occasions in the past there and I am sure this match, between two of the greatest names in football, will be no different. We look forward to coming up against Jose Mourinho again and competing against some of the world's greatest players at Real Madrid. It is right that we do all we can to give our supporters the opportunity to see the team play and, in doing so, promote all that is great about Celtic and Scottish football."

Organisers insist they are delighted to have lured Celtic and Real Madrid, and they could get a 70,000 full house. Don Smolenski, the Eagles' chief operating officer, admits he is thrilled Celtic have agreed to play their only game in the USA this year. He said: "We are very excited about hosting the Spanish League champions against the Scottish League champions. We expect this to be a heck of a match-up."

Other teams who will take part include Liverpool, Chelsea, AC Milan, Juventus and Paris St Germain, along with Major League Soccer sides, LA Galaxy, DC United, Seattle Sounders and Toronto.
